We have partnered with Cumming Elementary School and Mashburn Elementary School in Forsyth County, GA to help provide English and Spanish books for their dual language instruction program.
Cumming Elementary and Mashburn Elementary both have a program called DLI-Dual Language Immersion. Parents can sign their kids up starting in kindergarten and goes through the fifth grade for their kids to be taught in English half the day and Spanish the other half of the day. They also have a high percentage of kids at CES that are from spanish speaking homes. There are never enough funds for books, especially for non-english books.
We were going to do a coat drive for CES (a title 1 school with the majority of kids on free lunch support) but they were blessed with a donation of 500 coats! They asked if we would not mind getting some books for the kids to help foster their love of reading and learning. So we said ‘YES!’. When our own Sarah Simcox (teaches a DLI kindergarten class at Mashburn) heard what we were up to, she said she needs books too! So we are collecting books for both schools.
There is an Amazon gift registery set up to have the books shipped to us so we can sort them for each school. You do not have to order off of the registry, you can bring them to church. We are looking for spanish or bilingual books for ages K-5. Any books that are age appropriate are welcome as the schools can use them for prizes as well. There are seasonal books in English as well as a lot of Spanish titles that the media center specialists have requested.
Thank you for helping the kids in our communities learn and know that they are loved by Sawnee Ridge Church!
